Application of Weidmuller UR67 Series High-Protection I/O in Smart Logistics Stacker Cranes

With the rapid development of e-commerce and intelligent manufacturing, the logistics and warehousing industry is accelerating its transformation from labor-intensive to automated and intelligent systems. As the core equipment of automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS), the operating efficiency and positioning accuracy of stacker cranes directly determine the throughput and operational accuracy of the entire warehousing system. However, in real-world environments, the challenges they face are far more complex than those on paper.

Stacker Cranes Face Multiple Application Challenges

Complex Environments Threaten Stability

In manufacturing industries' AS/RS, equipment needs long-term stable operation. Due to the complexity of its mechanical structure, maintenance is much more difficult than with conveyor lines, and construction is also affected by the working environment. This places higher demands on the durability and maintenance-free nature of the underlying electrical control components.

Complex Wiring and High Maintenance Costs

Traditional centralized architectures require a large number of sensor and actuator signals to be aggregated to the main control cabinet:

Initial wiring is long, complex, and costly; Subsequent maintenance requires point-by-point troubleshooting, resulting in low efficiency.

Vibration and Shock Test Connection Reliability

Stacker cranes start, stop, and move at high speeds on tracks. Continuous mechanical vibration and impact place demands on the robustness and sealing of connections; any momentary poor contact can lead to signal interruption.

These issues directly determine the stacker crane's ability to operate continuously, accurately, and efficiently, and also define the project's efficiency ceiling.

Weidmuller UR67 Series High-Protection I/O Significantly Enhances Key Stacker Crane Performance

To overcome these challenges, the project adopted the Weidmuller UR67 series high-protection I/O solution, moving the I/O from the electrical cabinet to the actuator site. This significantly shortened the link distance and improved the system's resilience and response speed.

By deploying the Weidmuller UR67 series high-protection I/O solution, the project team gained significant technical and cost advantages, while simultaneously achieving a marked leap in key dimensions of the stacker crane.

Unfazed by Harsh Environments, Enhanced Stability

The UR67 module maintains stability even under harsh conditions such as high temperatures, humidity, condensation, and strong vibrations, ensuring adaptability during construction and providing customers with longer continuous operating cycles and higher system availability.

Boosted Efficiency, More Stable Cycle Time

Supports Profinet IRT real-time communication, perfectly meeting the needs of high-real-time applications; High-speed communication between the IO-Link Master and Hub (as short as 3ms) ensures almost zero delay in signal transmission to the PLC, allowing the stacker crane to maintain extremely high accuracy during high-cycle operations, reducing misalignment and rework.

Simplified Wiring, Easier Maintenance

The external cabinet solution significantly simplifies electrical design, wiring, and installation. Combined with the transparent diagnostic function of IO-Link technology, fault location is faster, and subsequent manual maintenance costs are significantly reduced.

Robust Connections, Uninterrupted Operation

Weidmuller's superior connection technology ensures the stacker crane remains secure and sealed even under high-speed vibrations, preventing system malfunctions due to electrical loosening, thus eliminating the need for frequent maintenance.

Weidmuller's UR67 series high-protection I/O solutions extend control from the control cabinet to the equipment field, enabling stacker cranes to maintain millimeter-level accuracy and high-speed stable operation even under continuous real-world conditions. When control is truly close to the field, smart logistics truly "runs."
